Reflecting its collaborative spirit, the Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation has strengthened its relations with the Canary Islands’ Music Festival, thus permitting the coliseum in this current season to take on one of the concerts of the 27th edition of the winter Festival. The Madrid Community Orchestra and Choir and the Chamber Choir of the Palau de la Música Catalana are to perform Stabat Mater, by Gioachino Rossini.

Stabat Mater is a musical work created by the Italian composer in the form of a liturgical sequence about some traditional Catholic hymns from XIII century (a prayer Stabat Mater) attributed to the work of Pope Innocent III and to the Franciscan monk Jacopone da Todi and had its premiere on 7th January, 1842 in the Ventadour hall of the Théâtre-Italien in Paris. The Stabat Mater by Rossini is closely linked to Spain, as this was an assignment dated in 1831 by the prelate Manuel Fernández Varela, who himself wished to possess a manuscript by Rossini and a Stabat Mater which would be a rival to the renowned Pergolesi. At the beginning Rossini was reluctant to comply, however on the other hand, he did not wish to disappoint Father Varela and yielded to his insistence.

Led by the maestro José Ramón Encinar and with Jordi Casas i Bayer at the helm of the Choir, Orchestra and Choirs are to accompany the voices of the soprano Ainhoa Arteta, the mezzo-soprano María José Montiel, the tenor Ismael Jordi and the baritone Nicola Ulivieri.
