The Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation wraps up its programme for the 2009-2010 season with an ambitious production of its own. Featuring the participation of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria, the Choir of the Prague State Opera and the Opera Festival Choir of Las Palmas Alfredo Kraus, the maestro Pedro Halffter is to conduct Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, with stage design being handled by Miguel Ángel Coque.

In The Flying Dutchman, Wagner plays heavily on the emotions to expand upon the idea of human redemption. Trapped within ourselves by our own suffering and anguish, much like the Flying Dutchman, escape can only be found through true love, which (as Senta experiences) is born from compassion, understood as the capacity to feel the pain of others as your own.

This production centres around this core idea and puts forward a symbolic interpretation intended to make the underlying heart of the drama more readily understandable and to enhance its deep emotional impact, with the sole purpose of stimulating the emotions of the audience.
