The genius Russian pianist is to perform on Thursday 29th April at 20:30 hours
The classical musical lovers in the Canary Islands are very fortunate as one of the greatest piano performers of all times, the Russian Arcadi Volodos, is to perform on 29th April at 20:30 hours in the Teatro Pérez Galdós. In this unique concert to be performed in the Canary Islands, the acclaimed pianist has chosen a repertoire with pieces by Aleksander Scriabin, Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Arcadi Volodos’ virtuoso talent live that has caused so much success throughout the world.
Volodos, born in St. Petersburg in 1972, began his musical training studying voice and direction and did not did not devote himself to serious study of the piano until 1987 in the St. Petersburg Conservatory. His piano training continued at the Moscow Conservatory with Galina Egiazarova, in Paris with Jacques Rouvier and in Madrid at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía with Dimitri Bashkirov.
The concept of “competition” never entered the head of the young Arcadi Volodos, since he refused to take part in competitions in his youth and he initially dismissed the ideas of building a career as a soloist. His meteoric career took off thanks to a fortunate coincidence: a manager of the Sony Classical label was on a business trip in 1996 when a French friend urged him to listen to a private performance of a few pieces by an extremely talented pianist. The "audition" took place in a small house in Antibes on the Côte d'Azur, and the Sony manager was so impressed by Volodos´ exceptional ability that he immediately offered him an exclusive long-term contract. His explanation at the time: "You only come across someone as talented as Arcadi Volodos once in a lifetime".
Arcadi Volodos made his historic debut recital at Carnegie Hall in the autumn of 1998. Recorded with Sony Classical, the album was entitled Arcadi Volodos Live at Carnegie Hall. The first recording of Volodos for Sony Classical was titled Piano Transcriptions. Both recordings enjoyed a raft of different international awards and accolades (Gramophone Editor's Choice, Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Echo Klassik 1999) and received rave reviews: "Volodos has what it takes to become a new Horowitz”, Der Spiegel.
Thanks to the success of his debut album and his acclaimed appearances as a recitalist, Volodos started to collaborate with the world’s most prestigious orchestras and concert halls, including the Philharmonic Orchestras of Berlin, Munich, New York and London, the San Francisco Symphony and the Philharmonics of Israel, Boston and Rotterdam.
Volodos received the German award "ECHO Klassik" as the best instrumentalist of 2003. His third CD, recorded with the Berliner Philharmonic and conducted by James Levine, featuring Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto, was edited in autumn 2000. His fourth CD includes recitals interpreting the sonatas D 157 in E Major and D 894 in G Major by Franz Schubert. He has recently recorded live the Concert for Piano nº 1 by Tchaikovsky with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the conductor Seiji Ozawa, as well as piano transcriptions and pieces by Rachmaninoff. His latest CD "Volodos plays Liszt" was released by Sony Classical.
