Hundreds of pupils in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote have the opportunity to get to know the ins and outs of the Teatro Pérez Galdós by means of a project which promotes reading

The Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation, the Department of Education of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and Cam-PDS Publishers promote a pedagogical initiative amongst the educational centres in the province of Las Palmas

Hundreds of Secondary School pupils in the province of Las Palmas will have the chance to get to know the ins and outs of the Teatro Pérez Galdós by means of an interesting initiative promoted by the Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation, the Department of Education of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and Cam-PDS Publishers, with the project Leer el Teatro Pérez Galdós, with the aim of fomenting the interest in reading and art in the youth of today.

The project was presented this Thursday, 28th January by the Managing Director of the Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation, Juan Cambreleng; the Department of Education advisor of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Carlos Quesada; and the person in charge of Cam-PDS Publishers, Plácido Checa.

The state schools of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura that are interested in participating in this initiative can send their applications to the Gran Canarian Cabildo and to the editorial (leercanarias2010@grancanariaeduca.es / leercanarias2010@cam-pds.com). Those in charge will choose the 20 schools that can participate in the first phase of this project. The aim is to have more than 600 pupils taking part between the beginning of February and the end of June.

The proposed activity consists in reading the book La noche de fuego, by Francisco J. Quevedo García at school in the classroom. In addition to reading the book, where the story takes place in the Teatro Pérez Galdós, the pupils have to comment on it to their teacher. Once this has been well studies, the pupils will have the chance to visit the Teatro to get to know in situ the scenes where the action in the story takes place.

As well as the author of the book being present at the guided visit, the pupils will be accompanied by the voluntary guides of the Pérez Galdós. The latter being in charge of showing all the areas of the Teatro, not only the normal access to the public but also the area restricted to the artists and personnel of the Teatro. Entry to the coliseum is of course free of charge for those students participating in this project, as well as the bus transfer from their school which is to be defrayed by the Cabildo.

The first visit of the project Leer el Teatro Pérez Galdós is foreseen for next Wednesday, 3rd February at 11:00 a.m.. Those interested are invited to accompany the pupils on the tour.

Guided Visit Service

The project Leer el Pérez Galdós offers the students an exceptional opportunity to get to know the Teatro, as when they arrive they will have prior knowledge of this emblematic building from the activities carried out at school. However this project is not the only possibility of approaching the Teatro. For almost a year now, the Pérez Galdós counts on a reliable Guided Visit Service with more than thirty enthusiastic volunteers.

Thanks to the voluntary guides of the Teatro Pérez Galdós, thousands of people have been able to get to know all the ins and outs of the coliseum. The visits are being carried out between the hours of 10.00 and 13.00, from Monday to Saturday. It is likewise possible to carry out the visit in the afternoon, on prior appointment with the Press Office (Phone +34 928 433 805, or by mail prensa@teatroperezgaldos.es). In the case of group visits to the Teatro, discounts will be applied (from five people).
