The Teatro Pérez Galdós is to open its doors to the public to offer the hyperrealistic staging of ‘Figaro’s Wedding’ by stage director Emilio Sagi
The production of the Royal Theatre in Madrid, the Teatro Pérez Galdós and the Bilbao Association of Friends of Opera had its triumphant premiere last month in Madrid
The Teatro Pérez Galdós offers a co-production of the Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation, the Royal theatre in Madrid, and the Bilbao Association of Friends of the Opera. We are referring to no other than the staging of the opera Figaro’s Wedding by stage director Emilio Sagi. As was already observed in the Royal Theatre in July, a hyperrealistic staging has been created offering a great deal of Spanish and Sevillian influence. The performances are to take place in the Teatro Pérez Galdós on the following days: 21st, 23rd and 25th November at 20:30 hours.
The participation of the Royal Theatre arose as a result of the wish for the Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation, under the management of Juan Cambreleng, to offer the Gran Canarian public a piece of work of great value where the seal of the Islands can be perceived. Thanks to this joint effort it will be possible savour an ambitious production of the opera Figaro’s Wedding, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1786 with libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte from the work by Beaumarchais.
The stage design, by Daniel Bianco, has already arrived in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. From Monday, 2nd November, the technicians are doing their utmost to transform the stage of the Pérez Galdós so that it takes on the Sevillian ambience as wished to be transmitted by Emilio Sagi by means of a colourful décor and filled with light. Correspondingly, costume designers are setting up the wardrobe designed by Renata Schussheim, which is also characterised by the same trueness to the Sevillian character of the era.
Likewise in the next few days, the artistic cast, who is to be staging this opera, will be arriving at the Gran Canarian capital city. This opera is considered to be one of Mozart’s finest creations. Set in Seville, it relates the story of the preparations of the wedding between Figaro and Susana, the maid to the wife of the Count of Almaviva, who is unwilling to give up his traditional droit de seigneur.
Both the cast and singers, the orchestra and their director, differ from the premiere in the Royal Theatre. In the Pérez Galdós the Gran Canarian public will once again have the pleasure of listening to the Budapest Festival Orchestra, led by Iván Fischer.
Iván Fischer returns to the Teatro Pérez Galdós following his enormous success last season at the helm of the same orchestra in Cosí fan tutte, also by Mozart. In the words of the Hungarian maestro, “Mozart sported an X-ray vision of reality, and understood which emotions moved people”. With this in mind, Fischer believes that “young people are able to associate with the believable situations depicted within his works”, which also emphasizes the universal character and adaptation to current times.
The Budapest Festival Orchestra will perform together with the Mateo Guerra Chorus of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria, conducted by Luis García Santana.
The cast is composed of personalities of international renown from the opera panorama. The main characters are to be performed by Markus Werba, Dominique Labelle, Ekaterina Siurina, Marco Vinco and Katherina Kammerloher.
