I believe that the inaugural programme for the re-opening of the Teatro Pérez Galdós after having been closed for 7 years, and having been subjected to a restoration and modernisation process with multiple vicissitudes, -from its release as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) upon which the Canarian Heritage Law had agreed and prevented any intervention whatsoever on the building to a change in project-, is the perfect definition of what we want the new path to be.
It is without a doubt that an impression is made by the presentation in Spanish of the “Ring of the Nibelungs” in the production of the Mariinsky Theatre of San Petersburg, conducted by Valery Gergiev, after the solemn inaugural session -Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Pedro Halffter conducting our beloved Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria -, the recital by Grigori Sokolov, and the presentation of “Swan Lake”, in the new production of the “Leipzig Opera Ballet”.
During these busy four months and in addition to the previously stated, two Operas have been accepted -“Adriana Lecrouver” and “La Traviata” – organised by ACO (Canary Islands Friends of the Opera Association), that during almost forty years were guests of the Teatro and of course shall return to being so, and a concert celebrating the centenary of the “Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Philharmonic Society” that shall likewise return to being a “regular customer”, as well as other diverse activities taking place.
Or desire is to be a leading “Teatro de Stagione”. We embrace numerous genres: Opera, Ballet, Zarzuela (Spanish Operetta) (Spanish Operetta), Musicals, Jazz…, in addition to accepting the presentations of the two aforementioned organisations.
Our aims and desires are made clear in the programme of the currently presented 2007-2008 season. It is our hope to enrich the offer in the coming seasons, all of which may be followed through or Web site.
Rafael Nebot (2007)
This text was written by our previous General Director who, unfortunately, could not survive a sorrowful illness - but, in spite of it, managed to programme the present season - and his death happened before the Theatre reopened its doors.
In communion with his principles we, all of us that remain here and miss him, wish to dedicate him the rememberance and all the success that we could achieve in our attempt to deserve his heritage.
