The Boston Ballet has turned into a varied and vigorous company, maintaining an internationally acclaimed repertoire of classical, neo-classical and contemporary works. As well as being composed of dancers from Latin America, Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Japan, China, Mongolia and not forgetting the United States, there is also a Spanish artist, Yury Yanowsky , the first dancer who is a native of the Canary Islands, making this an unforgettable opportunity for him to perform in his native country in both programmes.
Two different programmes are to be presented of ballets rarely viewed in Spain. The first is Ultimate Balanchine dedicated to the great choreographer George Balanchine; and the second is Dance Made in Boston with four creations exclusive for and by the Boston Ballet.
Being an American ballet company, the style and work of George Balanchine is presented, the greatest neo-classic choreographer of our time, and we wish to honour this genius with three of his magnificent and outstanding works. These three contrasting ballets vary from joy to drama to abstract, each piece fully representing the distinct style of Balanchine. Ballo Della Regina evokes the purity and beauty of the classics, with the score from the opera Don Carlos by Verdi. Rubies is one of Balanchine’s crown jewels that marked the beginning of a long and prosperous relationship between Balanchine and Stravinsky. The Four Temperaments shows yet another facet of Balanchine’s style with the minimalist purity of movements with a store created specifically by Hindemith for this intense ballet, which continues to be true contemporary masterpiece.
Dance Made in Boston supposes two great challenges for us, the first of which being the première in Spain of four exclusive choreographies for the Boston Ballet with the signature of three of the most significant choreographers representing the new American neo-classical style which has never before been presented in Spain. Helen Pickett and Sabrina Matthews created Tsukiyo and Ein Von Viel respectively. The second challenge is likewise a première in Spain of two creations by our resident choreographer, Jorma Elo: Plan to B, the first piece of work was choreographed in Boston and gained him great acknowledgement in the American dance panorama, and Brake the Eyes, the most contemporary.
